Dear DeDe is At It Again!

Welcome back to another exciting visit with Yours Truly!

Oh Dog, have we had quite the drama this week!  Graybie Baby has a sensitive tummy, and after Jen got back from her trip he was not eating.

So she gave him some of his probiotic meds, but he still wasn’t eating.

She went to find something that might entice him, and she got Royal Canin for sensitive tummies. He ate it once and then no more.

She went and bought all sorts of canned food. He wouldn’t eat it.

So AGAIN she went to our regular pet food store and asked for samples of every kind of cat food they had. Afterward she stopped at the grocery and while there found a bag of food that has been torn while stocking. She got that too.

So in this past week this cat has been given Royal Canin, Nutro, Evo, Chicken Soup, Newman’s Own Organics, and Holistic. And which food do you think he decided to eat?

Of course, the food from the markdown rack at the grocer. *rolls eyes*

Just goes to show ya that it don’t matter how good the food is if they don’t eat it.

See ya next week!

What’s the Right Thing to Do?

Hissy Fit Jones here. I’m the go-to guy for all things stray and feral.

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous contacted Rumpy this week. He spoke of a neighbor who has several outdoor cats. The neighbor feeds the cats, but that’s about it.

The reader said he recently noticed one of the cats was injured, and he mentioned it to the neighbor. The neighbor said the cat was fine. The reader decided to take the cat to the vet and get it fixed up.

This led us to a discussion of what are the ethical implications for caring for outside cats.

If the animals are strays and you feed them, does that make them yours? Or are you just providing a handout?

If they keep coming back, what types of care should you be expected to provide for these animals?

And if you’re in a position like our reader, what should you do?

I can speak from our own recent experience with mama and her babies. Mama came here looking for some help to feed her kittens. We tried to find a rescue to take the kittens, but had no luck. We agonized over what was the best thing to do, and what could we live with. Jen decided to have mama spayed. But when taken in, mama tested positive for FeLV. The vet strongly recommended that she be euthanized and the kittens surrendered. It was difficult, but that’s what we did. And I haven’t told you all this before now because the whole experience has been upsetting.

It’s my position that if you’re going to feed them more than once, you’ve made a commitment. As such, you should take reasonable steps to provide care. That means spay/neuter, vaccinations, and medical care. And if you can’t afford to provide needed medical care, then you should attempt to rehome the animal, surrender the animal to animal control, or have your vet euthanize the animal.

I also believe that if you have a neighbor who is not being a responsible pet owner, it is your responsibility to discuss your concerns with animal control. It may be the owner needs to be educated, or it may be the pet owner is neglectful and there needs to be intervention for the well-being of those animals.

That’s not an easy one, and to be honest, most of us won’t do that because animal control services has been made out to be such a bogeyman. But if animals are sick or injured and are not being properly cared for, I think it’s the right thing to do.

Now it’s your turn to weigh in. What do you think is the right thing to do here?

The Cookie’s the Thing…

Oh Dog! Anyone that knows anything about Rumpydog knows that I love cookies!

What’s the fascination with cookies? Well, as with most obsessions, it started with a human.

We used to have Jen trained to give us a cookie for going outside. Then when the vet talked to her about how that wasn’t healthy for us, she cut us way back on treats. Now we get a small treat in the morning (after DeDe takes her meds) and a regular treat in the evening.

But I haven’t forgotten those “Good Ole’ Days.” One day, I hope one day they make a comeback.

And now you know why I’m so into cookies!

And here’s a video to show me in full cookie mode (and here’s the link in case the embed isn’t working).

The Natura Tour

As promised, here is a review of my tour of the Natura manufacturing facility.

The Natura plant is located in Freemont, Nebraska. It’s where the dry kibble for all of their brands (Innova, California Natural, HealthWise, Karma, Evo) is produced. The treat biscuits (including Mother Nature) and canned foods are manufactured elsewhere.

from younglovellc.com

The plant was built in 2003 with recent additions made. It was designed to be efficient and to limit the introduction of contaminants. We were told that all ingredients brought to the plant are tested for contaminants before being accepted. The design of the plant itself was meant to reduce the likelihood of infestation. The concrete structure also makes it easy to clean. Indeed, I didn’t see one speck of dust, even on the baseboards.

The manufacturing process is automated. According to the P&G executives, it takes fewer than 25 people per shift to keep the manufacturing process going. Ingredients are mixed, air pressure moves the product through the line, and product is tracked by computer to guarantee the first manufactured is the first out.

Ingredients are not human-grade. Below is a pic taken by P&G staff of the line where the carrots and apples are introduced. The chicken comes into the plant pre-processed in large containers with signs indicating it’s not human-grade. When asked why, we were told something to the effect that such labeling was required for pet food. Of course I didn’t learn until later about the class-action lawsuit (Ko v. Natura Pet Products, Inc. (No. 5:09-cv-02619)) settled by this company regarding advertising claims made about the quality of the food.

We also toured the company’s Health and Nutrition Center. That’s where they keep the dogs and cats that test their products. We were told the testing was non-invasive and was limited mostly to palatability (which food tasted better) and stool firmness.  We were told there were currently 35 dogs and 24 cats on-site for testing with more dogs to come.

The cats were kept in two rooms. We were told the cats are caged when fed, and for longer when testing foods (to get those stool and urine samples), but the rest of the time they are in the rooms. There was not much room for exercise and certainly not enough to run in. There was a staffer in one of the rooms waving a toy around, but there did not appear to be much interest in the activity from either the cats or the staffer.

I can’t say much about the dogs because we weren’t allowed to see them. There were three dogs on the grassy area we saw with two staffers. We were told the dogs get exercise for up to an hour per day broken up into increments.  The dogs are kept in kennels but are given recreational time in groups of up to six.

The animals used for testing were originally rescued animals but the company now buys animals from breeders. Once finished with the animals, they are adopted out.

So  for those of you looking for pet food designed to provide balanced nutrition or to accomodate special dietary needs, like DeDe, this company has products you may find appealing.

Dear DeDe Remembers

Oh Dog! It’s time for another visit with me, DeDe!

.

Monday is Memorial Day here in the US. The day is set aside to remember those who have fought for their country.

When Jen’s brother was in Afghanistan, the family agonized the entire time, though he was guarding prisoners of war and was relatively safe. We can’t imagine how it must hurt for those families that know their loved ones are in harm’s way, or for those families whose warrior has made the ultimate sacrifice.

.

Not all memories of war have to be sad. For instance, Jen’s grandparents met during World War II.  Her grandfather was stationed in England where he met her grandmother.  Each thought the other was wealthy; neither had any money. But they married, settled in Alabama and made a good life for themselves.

.

.

Many dogs have also served their country.  There is a memorial page for these dogs at USWarDogs.org.

Regardless of how you feel about war, I hope you remember that it was NEVER the soldiers that got us into it.

PetSmart Toys R Us Pets Collection

So I was contacted by Allison Macalik and asked if I would be willing to review some of the new dog toys being introduced by PetSmart. And I said sure!

I was sent a selection of toys from their new Toys R Us Pets Collection.

The toys I was sent were cute, but not the kind of toys Jen would typically choose for me.

I destroyed the Vinyl Tire and Rope Animal right away.  SCORE! The Pets Patterned Body Canvas Caterpillar was not far behind.

Gone in 30 minutes!

When I posted the news on Twitter, I was sent a different toy- the Double Loop Tennis Ball/ Tug Rope Toy.

replacement toy

So, did I like the toys?  Well, to be honest, yes.

The Pets Dumbell Treat was a favorite, especially when Jen put kibble inside.

.

.

But the cloth squeaky toys? I loved them, but Jen would never buy those for me. In addition to being impractical (as in quickly destroyed), they are unsafe. I almost ate one of the squeakers.  If you DO let your dogs play with toys like these, they should always be supervised.

Surprisingly, this was my favorite.

This is the Wacky Water Bottle Cruncher. And this pic was taken last night, two weeks after I got the toy. Notice that I haven’t torn the ears off or the eyeballs.  Here’s a video of me playing with the bottle cover toy.

.

The plastic bottle inside can be replaced (I’ve already replaced once), and the cover can be washed. As you can see, this toy is ready for that.

The ball/rope toy is durable, and I enjoy playing catch with it. Jen tried to video me, but that didn’t work too good. Kinda hard for humans to video and play at the same time.

So the toys are going to be in PetSmart soon. Check them out!

Bad to the Bone!

Oh Dog! While we recover from our forced incarceration, I thought I’d share with you another one of my previous posts.

Today I thought I’d remind ya of just how cool I really am….. not that I thought you’d forgotten.

Rumpy’s Bad to the Bone!

My Meet-up with Natura

Jen here. Rumpy’s agreed to let me take over.

So today I am flying home from Omaha, Nebraska, after going out to meet the folks at Natura Pet Company and to tour their plant.

from rescueleague.org

from rescueleague.org

Natura was started in 1992 by John and Ann Rademakers and Peter Atkins. Their desire was to make healthy food for dogs and cats.

In 2010 the company was sold to Proctor and Gamble. The manufacturing process and the product ingredients were not changed, though improvements have been made to the plant.

Also, the Innova brand is introducing some new changes to their line of products. The potatoes and rice are out, and whole grains are in (they don’t use corn, wheat or soy).  Sounds pretty good, huh? These new changes in ingredients will begin in July and should begin showing up in stores in August.

Now I’m sure what you REALLY want to know is why I was asked to do this. Well, duh! Isn’t it obvious? It’s because of you!

I was told they have access to data on blog readership, and you guys are in their target demographic.  Which is cool, but I don’t think I’m a part of that demographic. The Natura folks are good people and they do have partnerships with animal rescue groups.  But I didn’t hear alot of talk about supporting animal welfare issues while I was there.  That disappointed me.

Anyway, later I’m going to tell you about the what I saw and learned while there.

But today my priority is to get home and get some rest- and pray June Buggie didn’t pee on my pillow.
