Martha- A Special Needs Kitty With a Heart of Gold!

Oh Dog! Today you are in for a super-special scrumpdillyicious treat! Martha is the sweetest kitty in the whole world, but as you will learn, she has some special needs. She’ll tell you more about it. Give her a warm welcome everybody!

Martha: Hi, Rumpy, it is me, Martha! *wobbles in, shakes paws and falls flat*

Rumpy: Oh Dog! Are you OK?

Martha: Hehe, I walk like a drunken sailor, but that is just my CH. Thank you for inviting me! I brought you a nice juicy T-bone steak!

Rumpy: Thank you so much! While I eat this, how about you tell us a little about your and your family?

Martha: Ah, about me … I am one lucky kitten, I live with two sisters, Becca and Makitza, furmummy Masha, thunderpawing black Mighty Sarah, and recently adopted LittleCat, so 3 tabby tigers and 3 house panthers. We all used to be street cats. I am the only one with special needs … Oh, I almost forgot to mention Mum and Dad, who love us very much. Our Facebook friends sometimes say we are spoiled, but we never complain about that!

Rumpy: I think every animal should be spoiled! What’s a day life in Martha land?

Martha: We spend our days birdwatching *licks lips* and enjoying sunshine. Our complete small city garden was turned into one huge enclosure last Spring, when the weather is nice we enjoy great outdoors.

Rumpy: How cool is that! So what is this CH you have Martha?

Martha: Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) is the incomplete development of the cerebellum. This can be caused by an inherited disease or an infectious, toxic or nutritional problem. The most common cause in cats is an infection with the Panleukopenia virus. CH is not contagious neurological condition, it is not painful, it is not curable, but it also doesn’t get worse, on the contrary, most CH kitties adopt to their ‘differentlyabilities’, they learn to compensate and do things in their own way so it may look like CH ‘has improved’. CH kitties can also benefit from physical rehabilitation. It seems that we, CH kitties, are not aware about being different, and there is no need to feel pity for us. Many humans find us inspiring.

Rumpy: I find you inspiring too!

Martha:I am 28 months old kitten, who survived an infection (most probably with Panleukopenia virus) and some dog bites, when I was 2 months old. As a consequence of one or both of the above, I have Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH). Even though we were not able to get my final diagnose (MRI for cats is not available within hundreds of miles from our city), our vet and my neurologist concluded, based on symptoms and basic neurological tests, that my condition is most likely CH. I must say this: most CH cats are wobbly, but not every wobbly cat is a CH cat, it is very important to make correct diagnose, because sometimes a cat with dangerous but curable illness, that has symptoms similar to CH, if not properly diagnosed , can even die.

Rumpy: Yeah, like Tiny Timmy, whose wobbling was caused by exposure to over-the-counter flea and tick products. So are there special accommodations humans must make for a CH kitty?

Martha: Yes. Majority of CH cats can’t jump, some flip-flop a lot, some can’t walk at all, many have ‘litter box issues’. Some CH kitties never use litter box, they use puppy pee pads. CH kitties have different needs, based on the severity; main goals of accommodations are to protect the kitties from hurting themselves (i.e. falling from heights), and to help them with litter box usage if needed. CH kitties must be strictly indoors, there is a good explanation why on Ms Sarah Hartwell’s site .

Martha: My CH case is mild, I can’t jump, but I can walk on hard floors. At the beginning I could hardly walk, but thanks to continuous practice – my mum makes me walk 20 stairs up and down at least dozen times every day – I am one strong kitteh. (all staircases in our house have Martha-proofed sides ).

As for litter box, I stand when I go #1, but for #2 I usually flip over and do it laying on the side. My litter box is typical for CH cats – very deep, with one low cut entrance on the side, most of the times I do my business inside, sometimes I catapult myself out.

Rumpy: It’s good to know that Martha, because I think many humans would be afraid if they saw that and didn’t know what was happening. So where can people get more info about CH?

Martha: You can find out more about severity levels of CH in CH handout that was made by my CH friend Nanako’s human mum Elise Murphy, it is an excellent educational material *nods*. And please, Rumpy, if you have a chance to ask your friends to print it or send via e-meow to their friends and vets, please do, CH kitties will appreciate very much your help to spread the word about CH, the condition that is unfortunately not widely known about, so the lack of information about it leads – too often – to unnecessary euthanasia of kittens that can live happy healthy life, provided few adoptions in the house, and good loving human, of course, you know how that is important, MOL!

Rumpy: Awesome! My readers are great and will sure spread the word!

Martha: Excellent information about CH can be found on Ms Amanda’s Life With CH Cats blog, human mum to two CH kitties – CG (Carry Grant) and Allie cat. We have a CH KITTY CLUB, and affiliated yahoo group and our monthly Newsletter. Our CH adoption specialist, Ms Deb Martin, better known on FB as SpecialNeeds InNeed will find a CH cat or kitten for you, or a home for CH cat in need, and will most probably help coordinate / organize transport.

We have an open FB group Cerebellar Hypoplasia Cats and Kittens that you can join and get all the answers you need.

Rumpy: Thank you so much Martha!

Martha: And finally, my mum believes that it is very important for every cat’s and dog’s human parent to properly educate himself/herself. This is even more important for animals with special needs parents, and all animals with neurological conditions have special needs *nods*. Mum has her small column in CH Kitty Club Newsletter, it was called ‘Notes From Tanja’, recently she renamed it to ‘About Health’. There you can read articles from reputable authors and reliable sources / Newsletter Archive/

- many excellent articles were written by Moki Fogg’s and Tiny Timmy’s mums. Moki and Timmy are both wobbly, but they are not CH kitties, yet their mums are both very knowledgeable about CH. You can also find some useful info on my FB page Martha’s CH page

Rumpy: Ya hear that everybody? There’s lots of info out there, so help Martha spread the word! OK Martha, one more question for fun. If you was a dinosaur, what kind would you be?

Martha: I love dinosaurs! .. ummm, what was the name of one that could reach every bird feeder? Birdosaur? Yep, I wish I was Birdosaur!

Rumpy: Sounds good to me! I’ll bet June Buggie would wanna be one too. Martha, thank you SO much for being my guest today. You ROCK!

Martha: It was a pleasure to be your guest *takes a bow and falls flat* Oh, well, adds to my charm ♥

Rumpy: You are charming indeed!

June Buggie’s Rundown of the Candidates

MEOW! My name is June Buggie and I have something to say.

So today is Presidents Day here in the US- a holiday set aside to recognize those who have served as our leader.  I thought that since this is an election year, today would be a good day to discuss the records of the candidates who seek to be our next president.

I am NOT endorsing a candidate, but I AM here to talk about the record of these candidates when it comes to standing up for us animals.

First, let’s discuss the dismal record of our current president in regards to humane issues.

  1. Obama allowed wolves to be removed as a Protected Species.  Gee thanks, Obama, now the bloodthirsty Palins of the country can kill wolves with abandon and pose with their dead bodies.
  2. Obama has refused to list polar bears as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act.  They are listed as Threatened, but the truth is that the melting of the Polar Ice Cap is taking away their habit, and as a result, there are now only about 25,000 of the bears left worldwide.  The U.S. Geological Survey projects that two-thirds of polar bears will disappear by 2050.  BTW, did you know that Canada still allows around 500 polar bears to be hunted per year?
  3. In November, Obama signed a spending bill that allows for horse slaughter plants to proceed in the US.  Well, I guess we should be pleased the poor horses don’t spend the end of their lives in cramped conditions being shipped to other countries to face slaughter.  You DO know that’s how many of those race horses you cheer for end their lives- right?

For more information on the Obama administration’s record on animal issues in the past year, click here.

As for the contenders for the Republican candidate for president, is there ANYBODY that isn’t aware of Mitt Romney‘s escapades with the family dog Seamus?  If you aren’t, you can find out about it here.  And he has yet to offer any sort of apology for his behavior.

On the other hand, Rick Santorum is a strong advocate for animal rights.   When in the senate, he teamed with senators Dick Durbin and Arlen Specter to attempt to pass the Pet Animal Welfare Statute of 2005 (PAWS).  The law would have ensured proper care and nourishment of animals by their breeders.  If the bill had passed, puppy mills could have been rightfully modified and possibly eliminated.

Of course, Newt Gingrich never misses a photo op with an animal (have you heard of his visiting zoos?).  But his voting record during his years in the House was not too good ( 21% according to votesmart.org).

Finally, Ron Paul earned a big ZERO by the HSUS for his voting record in the animal rights arena.

Let me add that the ones who have the final say on how ANY elected official votes on the issues are the people who vote them into (or out of) office.  That’s why it’s important for you humans to speak up and let your legislators know where you want them to stand on the issues.

Happy Presidents Day everybody.

MEOW!

Oh Dog! It’s Sunday, and even though I’m late, I’m here with some more advice!

This time my advice is for Jen, whose iron count is very low and she feels tired all the time.

Chill out! Go rest, and let us take care of the blog.  It’s not like there’s anything here that can’t wait.

So if we don’t visit your blog or reply to your comments here for the next few days, it’s not because we don’t care.  We just have to take care of our own first.

Have a great week!

Meet My Friends From Doggy Daycare!

Oh Dog! Today I am happy to introduce you to two of my human friends! Kaylen and Tony work at Doggies Day Out, and I asked them to stop by and tell you about working at doggie daycare.  So give ‘em a warm welcome and a woo! woo! woo!

This is Kaylen!

Rumpy:  Thanks so much for being my guests today!  Now, I know I can’t be there every day, so tell us what else is so great about working at Doggie’s Day Out?

Tony:  What’s not to like?! I play fetch all day, and even better I work with dogs who don’t judge me for anything!

Rumpy:  Tony, I’m only gonna judge ya if ya don’t come up off that peanut butter Kong!  What about you Kaylen?

Kaylen:  I love everything about working at Doggie’s Day Out! I spend my day hanging with and spoiling my favorite four legged friends!

Rumpy:  Awesome!  OK you two, what’s a typical day like for you?

Tony:  I come in, do some check ins, run through my routine cleanup a couple of times, and then just play for hours with the dogs!

This is Tony!

Kaylen:  A typical day for me at Doggie’s Day Out involves checking dogs both in and out, some minor maintenance, and most importantly playing with and loving the dogs! My goal is to keep every dog happy, and to make sure that they are receiving the full daycare experience!

Rumpy:  Oh Dog! There’s nothing better!  Now, what would you tell someone who’s thinking of bringing their dog to daycare?

Tony:  Take a look at some of our pictures and notice not a single dog looks unhappy; we wear your dogs out during the day so you can cuddle at night!

Kaylen:  Daycare is wonderful opportunity for your dog to be able to interact and create relationships with other dogs! The cage free atmosphere allows for dogs to play with their daycare friends nonstop, and the caring staff ensures that your dog will be well taken care of during their socialization!

Rumpy:  Well folks, there ya have it!  Sounds like doggy daycare is a great place for everybody!

But remember, not all doggy daycares are the same, so before you enroll your dog in a daycare program, do your homework!

Check it out! I am a kitty
Who always speaks his mind.
I give the low-down on the state
of being for my kind.

My calling is to school ya
‘Bout how to treat us good,
And ’bout how nice our lives could be
If you’d do what ya should.

So listen up you people,
Let June Bug have his say,
Cuz I’ll keep ranting ’bout our rights
Until things go our way.

Introducting Fabulous Flo!

Oh Dog! I’m so excited! Today my guest is none other than Flo from the blog Fabulous Flo. Flo is a happy dog with a happy home. She’s never known misery or loneliness. I wish we all that that kinda story. Humans and animals, help me welcome Flo!

Rumpy: Thank you SO much for being my guest today Flo!

Flo: We love your blog Rumpy so this is very exciting for us! :)

Rumpy: *blush* Thanks Flo! How about telling us a little about you?

Flo: I’m a 40kg liver-nosed Rhodesian ridgeback, but even though I’m a big lass, I’m really still a puppy as I’m not even 18 months old yet.

Rumpy: You’re just a youngster!

Flo: I’m a really lucky girl – I’ve never been lost, homeless or badly treated. I had a forever home before I was even born. My human decided to get a dog from a registered breeder because she didn’t have any experience with dogs and it was important that she had as good an idea of what to expect in terms of temperament and size. She also wanted a puppy because she wanted her dog to grow up with Fergus and George.

Apparently my dad is a Grand Champion. I’m not sure what he’s a grand champion at, but I bet it’s probably something like plant-pot-chewing or bed-eating because I must get those talents from somewhere. To this day my doggy mum’s owner keeps in touch with my human to see how I am and she’s even come all the way (that’s 3.5 hours on a plane) to visit me.

Rumpy: How wonderful!

Flo: I have a big feline sister called Fergus (yes, I know it’s a boy’s name but that’s another story) and a big feline brother, George. Fergus was inherited from a friend who had to move away and George was rescued from a drain (in a posh part of town, obviously) when he was really, really small. George didn’t like me for a long time but he’s finally getting used to me now; you could never accuse him of being ‘quick’. I suppose I do chase him a bit, but I just want to see if he’s got a squeaker in him.

I’m a real dog’s dog. There is little I like better than meeting other dogs and getting to play with them, especially down on the beach. Where I live I can hear lions roar in the distance, but I’ve kept them out of the garden so far, so I’m doing my job well.

Rumpy: What? Lions? That sounds amazing! So tell us about your human.

Flo: My human is a novice dog owner, so I’m teaching her everything she needs to know. So far I’ve taught her that I can take washing off the line (but I can’t fold it up), I can eat a lot of cat biscuits and I can chew through almost anything I put my mind to… and I’ve put my mind to a lot of chewing. She loves taking me down to the beach and the creek for walks and we go out every evening when it’s a bit cooler.

She also makes sure that I see my doggy friends for a big play date a couple of times a week so I can have a really good run around and romp with them. She and my doggy friends’ humans selflessly sit drinking coffee and eating snacks while we play. We’re so lucky that they care about us enough to do that. My human says she didn’t think she could ever love a puppy as much as she loves me!

Rumpy: You are indeed very fortunate! So tell us Flo, what are your favorite treats?

Flo: Oh Rumpy… I LOVE treats and I’m lucky because I get lots of them. I think my fave would have to be a frozen Kong stuffed with mince, dog biccies and topped off with some lactose-free yoghurt. Or a frozen marrow bone. Oooo, or a piggy ear. Mmmm. Now I’m hungry. I get a treat every time my human goes out in the car. I have to go and lie down on my bed or my mat and she gives me a treat and then leaves. She always comes back, so it’s no big deal.

Rumpy: You are so lucky! Now, one question for fun. If you was a dinosaur, what kind would you be?

Flo: I would have to be sarcosuchus – it’s not technically a ‘dinosaur’, but it’s an extinct form of giant crocodilian that lived over a hundred million years ago. My human did a palaeontology thesis at university AND she’s worked with crocodiles so I think that’s fitting. Plus it had massive, dangerous jaws… just like me.

Rumpy: Wow! That is way cool! Thanks again Flo! You are awesome!

And you can check out her blog at Fabulous Flo.

Here he is enjoying a sunny window with Bubba.

And here he’s napping with Little Girl on the sofa.

And Sunday morning he surprised Jen by jumping up on the kitchen counter!

He’s come a long way from super-skinny sick kitty who was afraid of everybody to this!
