June Buggie Says End the Violence!

MEOW! My name is June Buggie and I have something to say.

You can watch a video of today’s Rant, thanks to Cat Forsley!

Animal cruelty is a problem in our society.

Domestic violence is a problem in our society.

But did you know the two often go hand-in-hand?

Indeed, 68% of battered women reported violence towards their animals; 87% of these incidents occurred in the presence of the women, and 75% in the presence of the children, to psychologically control and coerce them (NCADV).

The link between family violence and animal cruelty

Disturbed children kill or harm animals to emulate their parents’ conduct, to prevent the abuser from killing the pet, or to take out their aggressions on another victim more helpless than themselves.

So those animals that are found horribly mutilated? Animals abandoned in deserted areas or the middle of an Interstate? Animals found dead and stuffed in trash bins? Those could be beloved pets of victims of domestic violence.

It’s frightening. Also upsetting is the fact that many women remain in the home with an abuser because they don’t want to leave the animals behind. She fears what will happen to them should she leave, and she has nowhere for her beloved animals to go.

For those of us who want to see an end to animal cruelty, we must embrace the magnitude of the problem. If you want to help, here are some things you can do:

  • Find out if domestic violence shelters in your area provide care for pets. If not, help them find a way to get those animals cared for, perhaps through partnerships with animal rescue groups or through the community Humane Society.
  • If you suspect abuse in a family, offer to care for the pets if she leaves if you’re able to do so for an extended period of time.
  • Often victims will not talk about abuse inflicted in themselves, but will tell of abuse inflicted on a beloved animal. Start by asking about the pets.
  • If you work in a vet clinic and you suspect animal abuse, don’t be silent. You will help more than just the animal. You may save a human victim as well.

It’s time to stop the violence. Against animals. Against humans. Against us all.

  1. Chants with June Buggie – End the Violence! End the Violence! End the Violence! End the Violence!

  2. Good morning, June Buggie. Thank you for this great video with this very important message! When I see any kind of violence I’ll report this, without doubt anymore, even if I know the person. Animals can’t speak, but I can and I will and you’re so right: together we can make this world a better place :)
Btw You have a beautiful voice ;)

  3. Good message. I’d never thought about it before, but I’m entirely unsurprised that cruelty toward animals and cruelty toward people share a common denominator. Meanness is meanness.

  4. I agree it’s time to stop the violence. It is becoming far to frequent in our society today.

    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

  5. We definitely need to do something about all this terrible violence. We are chanting right there with you…STOP the violence! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug

  6. Could not agree more

  7. Great post because it is so true and we need to keep shouting so people will not only care but do something about it. Loving your shout!

  8. We are howling in agreement!

  9. Animals and Humans unite to create a better world for alll!
    love xx Cat

  10. When my therapy dog and I volunteered at our local domestic violence shelter, our training included everything you mention here. Thank you for your accuracy and for raising awareness.

  11. I agree 100%. It’s time to stop violence – urgent!

  12. This is such an important issue…Thanks for ranting about it today June Buggie…check out Life with Beagle’s post about Orlando’s Harbor House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and their pets

  13. Great message! I was just involved in a conversation with a woman the other day about how she should report a neighbor’s animal cruelty sake not just for the dog but for the children also living in the home. Such a very sad thing.

  14. eripanwkevin Says:

OMD! You got a really good point June Buggie! and the video is brilliant!!! I agree that if there is violence in one family, there will be more violences which might happen before long, so we should stop even tiny violence. We have to get rid of all violence!
P.S. your voice is so cute June Buggie! :)

  15. Great message, and shocking percentages!

  16. Great message and great video!

  17. Junie – timely post during a season when things should be nice, but often aren’t. If you can provide temporary shelter for a pet, please contact a woman’s shelter/ police station/hot line to let them know – it can make a difference in someone staying with abuse or going to safety. Sometimes that animal is the only good thing in their life.
Most serial killers start by abusing animals. So if you suspect a child is doing this: tell the police and insist they put it on record.
Too much anger in the world…but the world is big…each can try to make their little corner a safe and tolerable, if not happy, place.

    • And if you suspect animal cruelty, report it and insist the police take action- at the very least make a report. There needs to be some sort of record to help build a case.

  18. Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning Says:

Amen to that, Junie Bug. We support your concerns totally. Just so sad what some of our fellow furries and humans have to endure.

Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning

  19. We need more focus on domestic/animal violence, period!!

  20. Excellent post :) This violence must stop! It should also be remembered that these same disturbed children can be helped to rehabilitate by programs run with animals…also we shouldn’t forget men are also victims of abuse and domestic violence from women and this must stop too! As men they are often even more reluctant to talk about than the women. Women can be incredibly cruel and abusive to both children and animals too and men can be locked into silence and fear too. Humans need to get their act together and start learning how to treat each other and our animals with kindness and respect!!!

    • This is true also. Domestic violence is systemic and sometimes it’s one adult abuses another, and the victim adult perps on the kids, and so on……

  22. Hats off to you, June Buggie,. The connection between animal abuse & domestic violence is commonly overlooked so thanks very much for calling our attention to it.

  23. Dear June Buggy, Mommy could goes on and on about this topic. She has worked a lot with DV (including writing training for police departments). Violence against animals is a precursor to many things.
    Thanks for this June Buggie!
    Kisses
    Nellie

  24. Its really sad that people are so violent. And its the innocent that suffer. Our hearts go out to them, and we include the animals too.

  25. It’s an excellent cause June Buggie.

  26. I reblogged and scooped this one. Thank you!

  27. Namaste Rumpy. May you be heard and the word be spread all around the world.♥

  28. My Mom can write a book on this whole topic starting from her own childhood, to 8 years as battered woman in her 20′s to counseling youth, adults who are victims of DV, physical, sexual, emotional abuse to being on Bod of local DV org and shelter. And she has long known this connection between animal cruelty and DV. It is society’s undiscussable as is molestation within families. Everything June Bugie rants about is really about abuse of power. IMHO.
