Take the Pledge and Win!
Oh Dog! I’m so excited! It’s the Holiday Season, and shoppers near and far are searching for that perfect gift that will make the faces of their loved ones light up! That includes us animals!

I can’t wait to see what you bought me!
According to newly released poll, Americans plan to spend more than $2.5 billion on pets over the holidays this year. Unfortunately, 59% of pet gift shoppers would consider buying gifts at a store that also sells puppies—meaning some of that $2.5 billion in revenue may be supporting the puppy mill industry. The ASPCA is aiming to reduce this high percentage of potential shoppers by encouraging them not to shop for gifts at stores that sell puppies. As an alternative, shoppers may consider giving gifts that make a difference in the lives of animals in need, such as those from their online store.
Why is where you shop important? Watch this short video (nope, nothing gross):
To encourage you to Take the Pledge to not shop in pet stores that sell puppies, the ASPCA has provided me with a great giveaway with items for both two-legged and four-legged family members that includes:
- Jingle bell collars
- Smidge cat toy
- Paw stockings
- ASPCA holiday cards
- ASPCA orange tote
- Walker’s Shortbread cookies
- Gift card to Paperless Post
- ASPCA orange wristband
How cool is that! So what do YOU have to do to win? Simple, go to nopetstorepuppies.com and take the pledge, then come back here and comment on why you want to put an end to puppy mills in the US. The winner will be chosen at random from all comments received by midnight Central Time on Sunday, December 9th, 2012. Sorry gang, but this giveaway is open to US residents only.
So? What are you waiting for? Get to commenting!

I should have added adopt a rescue animal every time – its’s so worth it!
December 7, 2012 at 5:55 AM
Signed the pledge and also posted to wall on FB and tweeted. The treatment of the dogs in puppy mills is horrible. I urge anyone to please visit their local animal shelter and adopt. Please also consider donating money to your local shelter during the holiday so that more animals can be saved.

Good blog post Rumpy!!! Mom saw that video & put it on her Facebook too. We’re spreading the word. Are you going to go see Santa Claus? He’s going to be at Petsmart tomorrow. I think I may have to go see him.

My mom took the pledge the other day…We’ve seen this video a lot of places lately but that’s a good thing…the more people see it the better…Education is key and we hope this important message is getting through to those who need it most…Puppy mills are horrible for dogs and humans…dogs suffer…plain and simple they suffer in a way that breaks my heart…And humans suffer because they can unknowingly adopt a pup with serious medical and emotional problems that can tear up a family emotionally and financially
December 7, 2012 at 7:11 AM
That was an EASY pledge for us to make because we SOOOO hate puppy mills….Have shared this on Facebook too…..thanks Rumpy for telling us about “the pledge” !!

I will certainly take the pledge as I worked in a pet store in AZ it was the only job I could find at the time. And it was horrible leaving at night with those babies in there, sometimes sick and lonely.I actually have one of the puppies from there that a customer bought and gave to me as she couldn’t stand to see him in the kennel anymore. My Junior was 4 months old and no one wanted him as he was a big Chihuahua with floppy ears. But I gave him much love and the customer wanted me to take him home.He is 6 now and we live in TX and he is one happy boy.I am so glad to no longer work there, and when I did I made sure all the babies went to good owners and did my best to get them out of there as soon as I could. It was awful. But I made sure to give each and everyone my full attention ,I worked 6 days a week to do that. But since then I haven’t bought anything from a pet store that sells puppies or kitties. So honored to make the pledge and Thanks for always thinking of the little ones that need our voice to speak for them. Hugs

I cannot bear the thought of puppies and dogs caged in those stores and being sold to whoever has the money without any thought as to whether nor not the buyer has any idea what an animal needs.
December 7, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Puppy mills are terrible idea! We’re NOT like toys! We have our feelings and lives! I can’t stand to see animals being bought at petstore and being dumped like toys……
Thanks for sharing this great post Rumpy!
P.S. this giveaway looks wonderful! I wish I were US resident….

For the first five years of her life, Delila, a beautiful little chihuahua, was only known by the number on her tag, was never allowed out of her cage as she delivered litter after litter of puppies for her abusers’ profit. For the first three months after she was brought into a loving home, Delila slowly learned it was okay to come out of her little house. Today, I watch her scampering down the street with her “daddy,” joyfully wagging her little tail, no longer the terrified, submissive dog I helped bring home last winter. No one should have to endure what Delila did for someone’s profit or ill-conceived idea of a gift. Thanks for reminding us of that! xoxom

Took the pledge. But frankly Rumpy, I have not seen puppies for sale any where near me in any pet store, I live in the SF Bay area in Calif. And I would like to see this pledge for any pet store selling kittens as well. Cat/kitten mills are equally as repugnant and puppy mills. paw pats, Savannah

Rumpy, I hope to adopt very soon. Prating for two dogs!!!!
December 7, 2012 at 4:38 PM
I have never once gonna a pet from a store. The ones you get from the shelter or even when you find them on the side of the road will love you more then you could ever think! Rescue an animal and you’ll save a soul!
December 7, 2012 at 5:34 PM
Thanks Rumpy for putting the word out.
December 7, 2012 at 6:58 PM
I took the pledge and shared it on Facebook to my friends. There are so many animals who already need furever homes, and a lot of animals breeded in these circumstances can never find homes
December 7, 2012 at 9:26 PM
Went straightaway Rumpy. Puppy millers who make their living off the backs of dogs are more concerned with their profits than the animals’ welfare and the suffering it produces for the animals should not be allowed to happen.
December 7, 2012 at 9:44 PM
I met a min pin the other day. She was painfully adorable. But she was a puppy mill rescue. Apparently, the mill that had her was trying to breed down min pins. As if they need to be any smaller. Seriously, though, puppy mills are no good. And I happen to live in a state that has a whole lot of ‘em.

My person took the pledge, but I’m sure glad the pet store near our house doesn’t sell puppies, so she’s safe to get lots of toys and treats for me from there. People wanting pets should all get rescue dogs and cats. They might end up with one as great as me.
December 8, 2012 at 8:03 AM
Rumpy, you should be rewarded for spreading the word about puppy mills. i habe a friend who continues to buy dogs from backyard breeders. They are bad because many are not responible, don’t screen for genetic problems and temperment.
Happy Honukkah and Merry Christmas.
December 8, 2012 at 10:16 AM
i took the pledge, puppy mills are awful. all of my pets have been rescues or from local families I checked out. i will be tweeting my support
December 8, 2012 at 12:42 PM
I take the pledge to not EVER to buy anything from any stores that sell puppies or kittens! One must take great care in choosing a pet. I would never want any animal to suffer like in puppy mills. It is terrible that they exist. I will do everything in my power to end puppy mills!

Thanks so much for posting about this pledge. I love animals too much to knowingly support puppy mill operations by supporting stores that sell these animals.
