June Buggie Rants About…… Dental Floss?

MEOW! My name is June Buggie, and I have something to say.

7-31-11 003

I am being denied my right of autonomy. I must protest!

I am so ticked off! It seems Jen has changed the kind of dental floss she uses. Instead of using the regular, cool kind that she wrapped around her fingers, she is now using something called Plackers. It’s a little plastic stick with the floss connected to it.

So, ya think that by changing the way you floss, you’ll keep me out of the trash?

Why is this such a big deal?

Hey, dental floss is huge in this household. We have played Dental Floss Hide and Seek with Jen for years! We dug it out of the trash can, so she bought a can with a lid. We figured out how to knock the lid off, so she put the can inside the vanity. Like she doesn’t think we can open the vanity too! * rolls eyes*

But now she’s using these Plackers flossing thingies, and the party’s over.

Oh sure! SHE says it’s because it’s dangerous for cats to eat floss, or string, or yarn, or anything like that. It seems there’s the chance it can cause kitties problems if eaten, including perforation of the intestine or blockages. Hey, I got nine lives! I can deal with it!

What is this? How can I get my pica groove on chewing on that little bit of string?

Apparently though, she can’t. So it’s bye-bye long strands of dental floss and hello funny little plastic thingie.

The good news is, this makes a pretty decent cat toy too. What? What do you mean you’re cutting the floss part off first? Hiiissssssss!!!!!

.

  7. Jen is looking out for you. If you get an intestinal problem with the floss you might need surgery. YUK, YUK.

  11. Poor June Buggie. Why do you want to ruin all his fun?

We’ve started using the Reach flossers. You keep the handle but just replace the small piece of floss. It means you are throwing away less plastic.

  12. Hai June Buggie! *waving* Oh poor June Buggie…..sorry that you can’t enjoy those dental fross anymore but what Jen did is for you and your fur family, so I agree with Jen! *Whispers* our mom didn’t know that the fross could be dangerous for me and my cat brofurs….thanks for letting us know!

    • Oh yes! Strings, yarn, tinsel, and the like can be very dangerous. A cat will chew on it and swallow it. The string can cause an internal puncture or can wrap around the tongue or another organ and get stuck. It’s very bad!

  13. We have such a thingy too. It’s great! (mom once hurted her paws with the common dental floss)

  14. Isaiah got into the dental floss and thank goodness is went through and came out. I now have a covered trash can in the bathroom with a cover that if you step on it, it opens. I disconnected the step and now in order to open the cover you have use your hands. Now, if only I could stop him from shredding the sisal rope on the cat tree……..

  15. I am not sure which was funnier the article or the disclaimer…great job and a really important message too…tinsel on the tree at Christmas is another big concern…

  16. Aw, poor babies, Jen took away your fun. Meanie! But she loves you, so cut her some slack. :-) Thankfully, Callie and Shadow don’t bother with the garbage any more; and Ducky’s more interested in destroying her Kong Wubbas.

    • Garbage-tipping is great fun at our house. The garbage cans are secured now. The kitchen garbage can is inside the pantry, and on at least two occasions Graybie Baby has spent the day locked inside because he snuck in before Jen left for work.

  21. Our mom uses those things too…or something similar. We never thought about playing with them. Thanks for the tip, June Buggie!

  22. Haha my mom uses those thingies too. I think your mom’s reason for switching makes sense – safety over fun. I tolerate the same rationale around here. ;)

  24. So true. Another cool thing about Plackers is that you can use them while driving the car. Try THAT with dental floss!!!

  25. With those plackers, if you twang it between your teeth it makes a nice tune! Well, maybe not!

  26. Our mum uses them (different version) they are brilliant :-) x

  27. Our biped tried that and gave up. Back to floss but we’re not allowed anywhere near the disposable and it hasn’t struck our fancy to go after it. Must be a kitty thing, wag wag. Max & Bella

  28. Jen is totally right, June Buggie. Dental floss is SO dangerous if accidentally ingested by pets!

  29. Fun and lighthearted hiss :) Wonder if our kids know about dental floss hide and seek, it may explain floss lying on the floor :)

All About Me!

Hi! My name is Rumpy, and I am an Alaskan Malamute. I used to live in Middle Tennessee, but now my family and I reside in southeast Alabama. I have this cool blog that I started in 2011. Here at rumpydog.com we talk about all things animal, with a focus on animal welfare and responsible animal companion guardianship. But we also like to throw in a heaping helping of cute! cute! cute! I mean, how could you look at me and not melt, right?

My story? Well, I was found on the side of a busy street. Jenny thought she would help me find my home, but nobody claimed me. So now I live with her. She's a pretty good ole' gal, but she is mighty stingy with the dog cookies. *sigh*

There are also some cats- they each have their own story. June Buggie is their chief spokesperson. He is 16 years old, crotchety, and not afraid to say what's on his mind.
