Recall! Shmeecall!

Recently Jen wrote that our food had been recalled.

Does it matter what you feed your companion animals?

Does it matter what you feed your companion animals?

Several days after the initial recall notice, the Natura Company emailed that the recall had been increased to include more of the product. Jen was worried, and she called the company’s recall hotline and was told that since neither of us appeared to be sick, our food would be fine. The company sent her two coupons for $2 off future purchases.

But Jen didn’t feel comfortable, so she decided that with her next purchase she would change our food. And she’s glad she made that decision, because last night she got yet another email from the company saying Natura has again expanded the recall.  While we still have some Evo, she’s throwing it out and changing our food today.

I am taste testing a new food from Petbrosia. I’ll tell you more about that after I’ve eaten it for awhile. DeDe is now eating Nutrisca. Petbrosia also sent food for June Buggie to try. Wow…. pretty daring!

What we eat is important to Jen.... and to us!

Now I don’t know why the company chose to handle the recall the way they have, and there may still be nothing wrong with our food, but the way the company has handled this recall has left a bad taste in Jen’s mouth. If the concern was this great, why didn’t the original recall cover all products at risk?

Of course, if you do change your dog or cat’s food, you may want to carefully read the label. You may be feeding dog meat to your animal. WHAT??? Yes, check out this editorial from Slate.

I know. It’s all so difficult to navigate the food maze.

But it’s only difficult if you care what you feed.

When Your Pet Food is Recalled

Posted in pets with tags , , , , on March 19, 2013 by rumpydog

Yesterday I got the news that every caretaker dreads: My dogs’ food is on a recall list.

Natura has issued a voluntary recall of some of their Innova, Evo, California Natural and Healthwise products. The products on the recall list include food for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

What my companion animals eat is important to me

I was afraid, and could not rest until I’d checked the list of potentially contaminated products to see if I had any in my home.

Fortunately, I do not.

But I was still worried. What do I do? Do I keep feeding my dogs this same brand, or do I try something else?

Unless I am willing to go it like Celi at The Kitchen’s Garden, I’m going to have to trust somebody to provide me with food for my animals.

Who am I going to trust?

Two things about Natura impressed me yesterday. First of all, they chose to issue the voluntary recall. If you live in the US like me, you know that doesn’t always happen so quickly. And second, I received an email last night from Tammy Barker of the company, letting me know about the recall.

I can’t tell any of you what to do. But I’ve decided that what’s right for me is to trust that if Natura did the right thing this time, they will keep doing so in the future. For now, I’m sticking with them.

I do encourage you to regularly check recall lists. I am fortunate to have some wonderful Facebook friends who regularly post recalls. The FDA list of recalls is here. Another good online resource is Dog Food Advisor.

Have you found yourself in a similar situation before? What did you choose to do?

Finally Friday!

Oh Dog! It’s Friday! YAY!

YAY for Friday!

YAY for Friday!

The bad news is Jen got a call-out and was out very late last night. Poo! Lesson learned, and one chore for this weekend is to have a few canned blog posts ready for such occasions.

I do want to share something nice that happened this week.  I got an email from Bella and Beary of Bumpy Road to Bubba. They won the coupon for a free bag of Innova. Sadly, none of the distributors in Australia would honor the coupon. But I contacted Tammy Barker at the Innova headquarters and the company is going to send Bella and Beary something else so they can try Innova food. Isn’t that awesome? Thanks so much Tammy!!!!

Also a big thanks to Olivia Melikhov at the ASPCA. It was her idea to offer the giveaway and she was very quick to respond to the winner. And that on top of all the wonderful things they’re doing to help animals after Hurricane Sandy. I’ve talked to another person at the ASPCA about their efforts after Sandy and will share that info with you soon.

So happy Friday everyone! Enjoy your day, and have a fantastic weekend! woo woo woo!

The Natura Tour

As promised, here is a review of my tour of the Natura manufacturing facility.

The Natura plant is located in Freemont, Nebraska. It’s where the dry kibble for all of their brands (Innova, California Natural, HealthWise, Karma, Evo) is produced. The treat biscuits (including Mother Nature) and canned foods are manufactured elsewhere.

from younglovellc.com

The plant was built in 2003 with recent additions made. It was designed to be efficient and to limit the introduction of contaminants. We were told that all ingredients brought to the plant are tested for contaminants before being accepted. The design of the plant itself was meant to reduce the likelihood of infestation. The concrete structure also makes it easy to clean. Indeed, I didn’t see one speck of dust, even on the baseboards.

The manufacturing process is automated. According to the P&G executives, it takes fewer than 25 people per shift to keep the manufacturing process going. Ingredients are mixed, air pressure moves the product through the line, and product is tracked by computer to guarantee the first manufactured is the first out.

Ingredients are not human-grade. Below is a pic taken by P&G staff of the line where the carrots and apples are introduced. The chicken comes into the plant pre-processed in large containers with signs indicating it’s not human-grade. When asked why, we were told something to the effect that such labeling was required for pet food. Of course I didn’t learn until later about the class-action lawsuit (Ko v. Natura Pet Products, Inc. (No. 5:09-cv-02619)) settled by this company regarding advertising claims made about the quality of the food.

We also toured the company’s Health and Nutrition Center. That’s where they keep the dogs and cats that test their products. We were told the testing was non-invasive and was limited mostly to palatability (which food tasted better) and stool firmness.  We were told there were currently 35 dogs and 24 cats on-site for testing with more dogs to come.

The cats were kept in two rooms. We were told the cats are caged when fed, and for longer when testing foods (to get those stool and urine samples), but the rest of the time they are in the rooms. There was not much room for exercise and certainly not enough to run in. There was a staffer in one of the rooms waving a toy around, but there did not appear to be much interest in the activity from either the cats or the staffer.

I can’t say much about the dogs because we weren’t allowed to see them. There were three dogs on the grassy area we saw with two staffers. We were told the dogs get exercise for up to an hour per day broken up into increments.  The dogs are kept in kennels but are given recreational time in groups of up to six.

The animals used for testing were originally rescued animals but the company now buys animals from breeders. Once finished with the animals, they are adopted out.

So  for those of you looking for pet food designed to provide balanced nutrition or to accomodate special dietary needs, like DeDe, this company has products you may find appealing.

My Meet-up with Natura

Posted in Product Reviews with tags , , , , , on May 24, 2012 by rumpydog

Jen here. Rumpy’s agreed to let me take over.

So today I am flying home from Omaha, Nebraska, after going out to meet the folks at Natura Pet Company and to tour their plant.

from rescueleague.org

from rescueleague.org

Natura was started in 1992 by John and Ann Rademakers and Peter Atkins. Their desire was to make healthy food for dogs and cats.

In 2010 the company was sold to Proctor and Gamble. The manufacturing process and the product ingredients were not changed, though improvements have been made to the plant.

Also, the Innova brand is introducing some new changes to their line of products. The potatoes and rice are out, and whole grains are in (they don’t use corn, wheat or soy).  Sounds pretty good, huh? These new changes in ingredients will begin in July and should begin showing up in stores in August.

Now I’m sure what you REALLY want to know is why I was asked to do this. Well, duh! Isn’t it obvious? It’s because of you!

I was told they have access to data on blog readership, and you guys are in their target demographic.  Which is cool, but I don’t think I’m a part of that demographic. The Natura folks are good people and they do have partnerships with animal rescue groups.  But I didn’t hear alot of talk about supporting animal welfare issues while I was there.  That disappointed me.

Anyway, later I’m going to tell you about the what I saw and learned while there.

But today my priority is to get home and get some rest- and pray June Buggie didn’t pee on my pillow.
