Advice (and a Rant) From Dear DeDe!

Oh Dog! It’s Sunday, and that means it’s once again time for Dear DeDe! That’s ME!

Today I have some news, some advice, and then a rant!  I know, rants are June Buggie’s department, but trust me, this one can’t wait!

First, the NEWS: For those of you that know, I’ve had some health problems. I’ve been tested twice for Cushing’s but the results were negative. So my vet talked to a specialist and suggested a medication to slow the excessive water consumption.

Well, I started the meds on Friday and the good news is there’s already positive results! Jen is SO happy because that means I don’t have to pee all the time! She has been so worried about me! And, to be honest, things haven’t been easy for her either.  Keep those prayers coming folks!

Next, the ADVICE: Jen asked the vet about cases of heartworms in animals that are on prevention and the vet confirmed this is true. Dr. Taylor said they aren’t sure of the reasons why, but one thing we should do is to make sure we take preventative on the same day each month.

Well, we confess, we’ve not been as diligent as we should be, because Jen sometimes forgets. The vet told her about this great app offered free by Novartis called RemindMyPet. They’ll send you a text, email or both to remind you to administer meds!  Check it out!

And finally, a RANT! We are all steaming mad to learn that Larry Ottoviani lost his job with the 7-Up Bottling Company in Sacramento CA because, according to the company, he was feeding cats on company property and on company time (as printed in the Sacramento Press).

Not so! Mr. Ottoviani DID feed cats. He also TNR’d them, socialized kittens so they could be rehomed, and enlisted the help of volunteers to manage the colony.  But he did it on his own time.

For this, he was fired, and now he, his sick wife and his physically disabled child are homeless.

I am asking for you to help Larry and his family by spreading the word about this injustice. And please, BOYCOTT 7-UP.

June Buggie Rants!

Meow! My name is June Buggie and I have something to say.

So you got SO excited because PetSmart was fundraising for its charity yesterday. Well La De Da! And what a coincidence, here it is right before holiday shopping ramps up. Lots of goodwill toward their company was created.

Well let’s talk about these mega-pet stores for a minute. Why do you support them? Because they don’t sell dogs and cats but instead allow rescue groups to have adoption events in their stores? That’s great!

But they DO sell animals, and lots of them- everything from birds and fish to small rodents and reptiles. And along with those animals they make lots of money on cages, bedding, food and toys.

Do you know where those animals come from?

The Humane Society of the US posted an article this past September that addresses how many of these animals sold in the US are bred in mills just like puppy mills. Born Free USA posted links to newspaper articles detailing birds that were rescued from breeder mills.

The irony is that while rescues make hay of how great PetSmart is, they continue to turn their backs on Petland franchises that allow rescued animals to be adopted through their stores.

Funny, I don’t see the difference.

Don’t get me wrong, I do NOT want to see the mega-stores going back to selling dogs or cats. But what I WOULD like is to see them stop selling ALL animals.

So while you berate people for shopping at pet stores that support the indiscriminate breeding of animals, ask yourself, am I doing the same thing?

June Buggie Rants About PETA!

MEOW! My name is June Buggie, and I have something to say!

Dear PETA, what in the WORLD are you thinking?

I guess it isn’t enough that you use cheap tricks like getting famous people to pose nude and making fun of fat women on billboards in order to get your message across. Now you’ve decided that you’re going to launch a pornography web site in December to help you spread the message about the cruelty of factory farms and to promote vegetarianism.

Really? Porn promotes animal rights? Yeah…. sure it does!

On your web site you say that you use “controversial tactics” and nudity because it gets you free publicity to your cause. Granted, you’re right about that.

But mostly it makes you look like you’re a big joke. Which wouldn’t be so bad except when you look stupid, you make the Animal Rights Movement look stupid. HISSSSSSS!!!!!!!

And why are you always dissing women anyway? Don’t you know that women vote in greater numbers than men? Women are the primary shopper for pets? Women are the primary rescuers of animals? One would think that in light of this one would reach out to women to ensure their cooperation and support of your organization.

Instead you’re offering free pornography, and overwhelmingly pornography is viewed by men. And, interestingly enough, more so by men with conservative political leanings. This is not the way to secure a base of support or reach out to others who may otherwise support your cause.

But it does get you alot of affluent white kids to engage in activities that HURT the movement. You know, like dumping paint on furs. Yeah, I see that tactic has been REALLY effective.

The debasement of women does not help shut down puppy mills. It doesn’t address the pet over-population or unacceptable euthanasia rates. It doesn’t stop dogfighting, pet theft, or the sale of pets to research laboratories.

In fact, the only thing it REALLY seems to do is get attention for PETA.

So, what is it you’re supposedly doing for animals? Cuz I don’t see it happening.

June Buggie Rants!

MEOW!  I am June Buggie and I have something to say!

I want to say something to you people who are hurting right now because you’re unemployed, under-employed or who have a job that SUCKS but you’re stuck in it.

I’m sorry.

Yep, I’m sorry, and that is sincere.

Why am I saying that?  Because I know you’ve been beat over the head for the past few years.  If you’ve got a job but the conditions aren’t great, you’ve been told to “Suck it up!” because at least you’ve got a job!

If you don’t have a job, you’ve been told that “It’s not your fault!”  But the longer you stay unemployed the harder it gets.

Now I’m not here to give you a motivational speech or to tell you the secret to making your dreams come true.  I’m a Cat, not an abundance preacher!

What I do want to tell you is that I know sometimes you feel sad, and that it’s OK.

I also want you to know that there’s someone that loves you very much.  I make it a point to let Jen know how much I love her every day.

I don’t know what the future holds.  I do know that all we have is this one moment, this now, and that’s enough.

So….. take a moment to take off the armor you wear around the 2-leggers, just be, and let those of us who love you, love you.

What’s that?  *cocks head*  Do I hear purrs and sloppy kisses?

June Buggie Rants!

Rumpy: Oh Dog, June Buggie has something to complain about…. again. *sigh*

MEOW!!! I am June Buggie and I have something to say!

I am tired of you humans dumping your cats! First we had one cat show up begging for supper and now there is another one. My human is stretched pretty thin as it is and cannot take in your kitties.

Where did they come from? Did you let your cat out that was not spayed or neutered and it got knocked up? Did you move and leave your kitty behind? Did your kitty get lost and decide it liked hanging out at my house better than yours?

All I know is that SOMEBODY’S cat comes into MY yard and sometimes peeks in MY window and has even marked territory on MY deck! And then when I try to run outdoors to let them kitties know this is MY YARD Jen gets mad at ME!

Well listen up! I am tired of taking the rap for YOUR irresponsibility! If you are going to have a cat that spends time outdoors, you gotta get that kitty fixed! And if you don’t want that kitty anymore than do the responsible thing and either place it yourself or at the very least surrender it to animal control. Oh I know, you don’t wanna do that because they’ll kill your kitty. Well I’m sure starvation, rabies or mauling by wild animals is MUCH more humane than euthanasia. *rolls eyes*

And don’t let those holier-than-thou animal shelter people try to shame you for doing the responsible thing. It’s not easy, but trust me, dumping your cat for MY human to fret over just ain’t right.

Rhymes and Rants: co-starring June Buggie

As you know, the kitties have been very jealous of my new blog.  They think that since DeDe gets a weekly post that they should get one too.  So after prolonged negotiations in which I failed to wear down his resolve, I have relented and allowed June Buggie to have a regular segment.  More on that below.

But first, some info on RHYMES.  The haiku challenge was a great success!!!  Lots of you wrote haiku to share, be it on my blog, on Twitter or Facebook.  To each of you I say GREAT JOB!!!!

I don’t know about you, but I found it to be great fun, and thought we should have another challenge.  This time- LIMERICKS!

That’s right!  Now for those of you asking, Rumpy, WHAT is a limerick?  I wrote one just for you:

My haiku challenge went good
much interest there as it should
if you liked it too
the limerick’s for you
give it a try if you would!

Rumpy had a haiku challenge, and many of you participated, but some of you only after your paws were twisted.  Others didn’t participate at all!  Why is that?  Because you don’t like poetry.  POETRY!  Who on earth don’t like words?

Oh, I know, you went to school and some teacher force-fed you a bunch of poems that made no sense to you.  Then they made YOU write a poem.  So you did.  But was that enough?  NOOOOOO!!!  Then that teacher proceeded to tell you how bad your poem SUCKED!  It didn’t rhyme.  It didn’t have the right form.  It wasn’t the right topic.  Blah! Blah! Blah!

So after you got done with all the required literature classes you burned all your poetry books and swore NEVER to read it again.

Well, to those teachers that taught their students to loath poetry I say pppppffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!

And to you that decided poetry wasn’t for you, I say, Hey!  PULEEZE don’t tell me you can’t.  Instead say you prefer not to.  Got it?
