Butter Sox Introduces Us to Whisker City!

Rumpy: Oh Dog!  Today I’m talking to Butter Sox, office manager of Whisker City, a feline rescue in Seattle, Washington.

Butter Sox

What a gorgeous kitty!

Whisker City’s website states that the shelter was founded by April Brown in 1995 as an effort to help abused and neglected animals. The shelter is part of Blue Sky Charities, a non-profit 501-c-3 organization that focuses on helping both homeless people and homeless pets.

So Butter Sox, would you tell us a bit about Whisker City?

Butter Sox: Whisker City was founded by April Brown in 1995, to help cats that are rescued or surrendered to us. We are a non-profit, no-kill shelter. Our kitties stay with us until they find their perfect forever homes.

Rumpy: How Cool!  What makes Whisker City unique?

Butter Sox: Unlike many shelters, our kitties are not in small, steel cages. Our main “living room” has plenty of kitty condos, windows, a TV/Radio, and volunteers who groom us, cuddle us, and play with us! Because of our set-up, it makes the transition from the shelter to a forever home much less stressful for our kitties.

Rumpy: That sounds just like home!  I hear you guys have a feral house?  So what’s the story there?

Butter Sox: A long time ago, we took in some kittens that weren’t socialized. We decided the best thing for them was to build them their own little world…so we did! We no longer take in ferals, but the ones we do have are loved and looked after, just like their indoor buddies.

Rumpy: So what’s the feral house like?

Butter Sox: It’s an indoor/outdoor structure. The outdoor portion is fenced in, so they can enjoy the sights and sounds, but still stay safe. It has a kitty flap to the indoor portion, so they can come and go as they please. Inside, they have a sliding glass door, so the ferals can see what’s going on while staying warm. There are lots of fun things to climb on, and warm “kitty bins” for them to sleep!

Rumpy: Oh Dog!  My cats would love a place like that!  Now I also hear you have this thing called “Whiskers on Wheels?”  What is that?

Butter Sox: Whiskers on Wheels is our mobile adoption center. The WOW bus goes out to pet stores on the weekends, with kitties on board who are looking for forever homes. People can come aboard and get to meet and interact with the cats. If it’s a good match, you can adopt your new family member on the spot!

Rumpy: That is Pawsome!  So how can folks help Whisker City?

Butter Sox: You can help us by donating either through our website, http://www.whiskercity.com, or by shopping from our amazon.com wish list. Either way is easy, and helps both our indoor and feral cats.

Rumpy:  Great!  Thanks so much for telling us all about the awesome work being done for kitties by the great folks at Whisker City!

And because I think this is totally pawsome, I’ve posted their promo pic from the Whisker City website:

  9. Whisker City sounds awesome! I wish we had one in Miami…the poor kitties and cats at Miami Dade Animal Services have a 70-90% kill rate and it’s just awful. It’s great to hear Whisker City is making a difference in the lives of many sweet kitties! Thanks for sharing.

  10. My person will be driving through Seattle in a few days. She could probably take Scratchy and drop him off. Rumpy, I bet she could take June Buggie with her too. Oh, here it comes. My person said she thinks Whisker City is great, but cats should only stay there until they can find forever homes. Guess I’m stuck with Scratchy for awhile.

      • Adventureweiner, my person grew up in Seattle and she’s heading back for a visit – and leaving me at the dog hotel – no fair. She’s actually flying into Bellingham but will be driving through Seattle to visit family in towns south of there. We live in Sedona, AZ.

  13. I heard an interview with these guys on NPR a couple of months ago. I like their style and they are right in our own backyard [well, not literally…which is good because Chester and Gretel don’t get along that well with kitties 🙂 ]. So cool you found then and did an interview.
