No, It’s Not Freshly Pressed…..

….but with all the visits to my blog yesterday, I thought I might have finally made it! I had an above-average number of visits on a day I expected my readership to be down because of the hurricane.

Hey Buggie, do ya think we finally made Freshly Pressed?

So what happened?

I had NINETY-ONE comments in my Spam folder yesterday. Now, there’s been times when I went a few days without checking the Spam folder, but I’ve never had that many comments in there before.

I checked out my stats to see if they might shed any light on the Spamfest, but didn’t learn anything. However, I did learn the ten search terms most often leading folks to my blog are:

  1. Sugar glider
  2. Poo cake
  3. Sugar gliders
  4. Mandy May
  5. rumpydog
  6. rumpy dog
  7. poop cake
  8. congratulations
  9. veterinarian cartoon
  10. sidecar

Now I get some of these, but who searches for Congratulations?

I also learned that publicizing my blog on Facebook and Twitter isn’t as effective as I thought. Search engines are by far my most effective referrers. I guess now I need to learn about SEO, like the spam told me!

I have been visited by readers in 123 different countries, with every continent but Antarctica represented. Almost half of my readers are outside the US. If only I could get each country to send me cookies! *dreamy eyes*

Enough with the numbers game! You still have until the end of today to enter my Frosty Paws giveaway. It’s open to readers in the US.

And for all my friends impacted by the Hurricane: I know you probably won’t see this, but I hope you can feel the love all the rest of us are sending your way. woo woo woo!

  1. Oh Rumpy you’re so dang good looking and I see June Buggie is in agreement, she’s really showing you the love there. That SPAM is relentless isn’t it. I’d like to tell them “get a real job”, but I don’t have one either, HA.

  2. I got here today. I might need some advice from a pup like you about my own blog. Don’t read today’s and say not to write as much. it’s my ever so special “catch up on the last 8 months of craziness” blog. Not my best work, but the point is I needed to work. I need to figure out how to put a link to your blog onto mine even if they aren’t that related. Well, I don’t know. I write about mental health and mental illness, but my dogs figure prominently often in my blog entries. They are, in large part, my biggest hold on my own mental illness. I personally completely see a connection between dogs and mental health. I should be in bed. Patients to see, dogs to manage, etc, so I’ll have to try to catch up on some of your blogs I’ve missed over time. I might have to get some ideas about making a blog work, too.

Anyway, I look forward to catching up on your blog. Hope you are well. Just decidcd to pop in WAH!

  4. With spam, you’re never alone.
My best / most popular search is Cats Ears Bald.

  5. Maybe it was the Frosty Paws freebie? being in Australia I may be missing what is so popular about said product! Rumpy deserves to be FP’d, and if it’s any consolation I get some truly weird search terms leading to my blog as well πŸ™‚

  6. Im outside the US and also get visits from everywhere but by far the most consistent and leaders by zillions lol are the awesome folks in the great USA! The UK is trailing miserably! Congratulations on all your spam πŸ˜‰ Perhaps congratulations is linked to people’s desire to congratulate the awesome handsomeness of you Rumpy!!! πŸ˜‰

  7. HI, Rumpy! Isn’t that weird about the spam comments? That’s happened to us a couple of times too. WHAM! You just have all those comments in one day. Thank goodness for that spam filter, huh?
It IS interesting to see what folks search for. Motor Mommy’s most popular post (BY FAR) is one she wrote on “rat rods” (old jalopies with souped up engines). Thousands of views on that post, and something like 6 comments….??? Go figure.
Congrats on being so popular, my pal. We, too, are thinking of effurrybody in the path of the storm.
    Love, Sundae

  12. Congrats on all the visits. Believe me you don’t want to get freshly pressed. I sure don’t despite the accomplishment it represents. I have read a few posts by those who have been and it was a nightmare for them. One fellow described how he had several thousand hits and comments left the first day or two which diminished to several hundred the next several days and tapering off to where he has about a hundred or so new regular followers. Can you imagine making the obligatory visits and comments to thousands of bloggers? At 100 a day it would take months and how many to whom you should subscribe? Reciprocity can be quite a chore.

  13. Poo cake??
My weirdest one was something about Selena Gomez – weird!!

  15. What weird things people search for but well done on your immense hits and the number of countries represented. That’s phenomenal! I’ve definitely decided that i’m going to start a new search engine but it won’t bring up any sites to visit – I’ll just answer the questions they type in. In your case, things like “poop cake” – answer “if you eat it, you deserve it”

  16. Although I don’t know much about blogging, I think that your blog is wonderful as so many people from many countries read it! We animals make strong ties each other through your blog! πŸ™‚

  17. Yesterday seems to have been an odd day for everybody, many of the bloggers I follow experienced a huge increase on the traffic yesterday, mine double up my day best ever, however, I had only 3 SPAM messages.
Poo cake that’s a good one.

  18. i love your blog but I have a few questions–I’ve heard of this whole Freshly Pressed deal…what does it do for one’s career? I have so many friends who are dead set on getting FP and are horribly disappointed when they aren’t awarded.

    Posted by julesagray | October 30, 2012, 9:23 AM
    • The WordPress team chooses blogs to feature each day. That’s Freshly Pressed. There’s more info regarding how blogs are chosen on the Freshly Pressed page. Check it out!

      • Oh i know about FP, but it seems to be some sort of odd obsession. Guess I’m not interested in drinking that type of Kool Aid, but more power to those who are! Good luck!

  21. Poo cake. Awesome.

  22. As far as I can tell, the more hits you get, the more spam you get. Why? No idea, but I get the same thing. The last few days my numbers have been high, near 300 (I’m never freshly pressed either … I haven’t a clue why not, but I don’t really worry about it much) not counting followers. The spam has been crazy. I have to check it because a few real people are always mixed in and I have to unspam them. NO idea how they find us or what they think they have to gain by targeting us. Do they think they are fooling us by sending gibberish with half a dozen embedded links to who knows where??

    Posted by Teepee12 | October 30, 2012, 11:12 AM
  23. That’s a whole lot of spam, Rumpy! And we do love that pic of you and Buggie.

  25. Fame has a price Rumpy, I never have more than 7 in my spam file! I have to check often because I have a couple of followers who seem to routinely end up there, bummer.

  26. It looks like you get quite a few commentors that aren’t spam. Great job, Rumpy! BTW, it would never have occurred to me to search for the term poop cake. Interesting. πŸ™‚

  33. Hi Rumpy!
The same thing happened to me last week: more than 4000 hits in a day. I thought that I had been freshly pressed, but Nop! But I didn’t have any message in my spam folder, and apparently most of those 4000 came though yahoo images and all were looking for my Saint James cake…how weird πŸ™‚

  34. Hi Rumpy, I actually found you on twitter. I’m hoping all your readers are safe and sound.

  35. Your post made us look at our spam folder. For some reason, our pals the Island Cats are always there. Mom marks them “not spam” but they go back in the folder next time they comment. 😦

  36. We’ve only gotten 2 spam comments in over a year of blogging. I guess we should be glad! But what is with the poo & poop cake? Birthday cake searches bring in more peeps at our place than any other search, which is weird.

  37. Congratulations!!! I Googled that.
Sometimes the search terms that land people on my page crack me up. And the spelling… holy moly the spelling!! SEO makes my head hurt, but if you figure anything out send it my way!! I’ll be happy to do the same πŸ™‚

  38. I love your Rumpy Dog site here. I also friended you on FB. That’s where your FB symbol sent me, not to a public page. I used to always end up in the spam until I wrote about span, and copy and pasted a spam person into my article about spam. WP shut me down as soon as I pressed publish. When they put me back up again, I was out of the Spam folder. YEAH!! πŸ™‚

  39. Ninety-one spammers?????
What are you keeping in that spam folder? Kibbles and bits?

    Posted by Barb | October 31, 2012, 3:59 AM
  40. People search the crazy stuff. Some of it’s a lot more disturbing than poop cakes. I don’t get enough hits to really have a legitimate top 10, but I have hundreds of hits on things like “little schilde sex” that really bother me.

The spam activity is probably related to the content of a single post. I know when I wrote “Blah, Blah, Blah” I got over 150 spam messages on it.
