DeDe Tells the Tail of a Daring Rescue!

The animals had been abandoned without food or water in cages they could have easily escaped from.

Thankfully HSUS was able to coordinate with zoos and sanctuaries (including Big Cat Rescue) to find placement for each of the animals.

Even though Kansas has laws against owning exotic animals, there is no enforcement of the law, and anyone with a license from the US Dept of Agriculture can have these potentially dangerous animals in their possession.  This could have ended badly for the animals and for humans. Fortunately it didn’t….. this time.

It’s time to make ownership of exotic animals such as these illegal in ALL of the US.

By the way, next time somebody gripes to you about how the Humane Society doesn’t help animals, tell ’em this tail….. er, tale.

  1. Thank you HSUS for helping save those big cats that survived. Thank you Dede for sharing this story. I wonder what can be done to help prevent this….some newer, stronger laws obviously need to be put in place, in the least, enforcement of existing ones. Thank you for shining a light on this…I intend on at a minimum, firing a letter off to my own representatives here in Illinois.

    • There is lobbying for a federal law to make ownership of these animals illegal. But Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue says it typically takes 7 years to get such legislation passed.

  3. We love the work HSUS does….it’s just terrible that people keep animals they have no business having in the first place like big cats. Wild creatures SHOULD be just that – in the wild not held in cages and certainly not starved to death. Thanks DeDe for telling us about this wonderful rescue! 😀

    • You’re so right, Sammy. There’s no telling how much money was needed to bring the professionals in to rescue these animals, provide veterinary care, and transport them to their new homes.

  4. Oh my, even with the rescue and re-homing of so many animals, many more suffered.

    When will people learn?

  10. I’m very sorry for those animals who were found dead in a trash pile….they didn’t have to die if they would have been in the wild….
Thank HSUS so much for rescuing the rest of the animals from the terrible situation!

  11. What is wrong with people? WIld animals are not pets…and the little ones while cute, grow up big. Thanks to all who help in rescues like these.

  12. Agree – time for exotic animals as pets to be illegal – and I’m including skunk, fox, racoons…sheesh, just because it has legs doesn’t mean someone should be allowed to own it. Props to human society and all the volunteers who step up to help. And thank you for raising awareness!

  15. I read about that. Thank goodness they were able to save some of the animals.

  16. Oh goodness…That is so sad to read. I can’t imagine how some people can stand to leave and abandon animals without any source of food or water. If only people would stop wanting to own ‘exotic’ animals just for the sake of feeling special or like they have a hold over a wild creature that should be free and roaming in the world…Thank goodness most of them were able to be rescued and taken care of. A little bright spot in a story that could have easily gone another way.

  19. That is not too far away from us. We were all very grateful when we heard the story on the news to know that they were able to save at least some of the animals.

  20. I do wish W.P would sort out my updates! I even resorted to email updates but they’re so spasmodic it’s unreal!! This is so sad…but at the same time a tail 😉 of hope too. One animal saved is a victory, more than one is awesome!

  21. Thank goodness they were found,i’m sorry De De i apologise for the human race, they really are sometimes so in human.I love wild animals and as much as i do i would never even entertain the thought of taking them from where they belong..i locve them because of how they live and how they exist in their enviroment so it would be fair to say that you couldn’t claim to own one and love them.Wake up world we are putting our natural world in the dump and soon the only creatures left will be us…and that is not a nice thought.

  22. Some people should be caged. There is no excuse for animal abuse. For that matter, there’s no excuse for any kind of abuse.
