Introducing the Creative Cat!

Posted in pets with tags , , , , , , , on December 31, 2012 by rumpydog

Oh Dog! Today I have a special treat for you! Bernadette Kazmarski is a wonderful artist who finds inspiration in her cats. On her blog, The Creative Cat, she showcases her work, as well as her photography, poetry, and of course, her feline family. Help me give a warm welcome to Bernadette!

Rumpy: Thanks so much for being my guest today. Tell me about your art.

Bernadette: My first solo show was entitled “The Extraordinary in the Ordinary”, and I think that’s what my art, whether it’s painting, poetry, photography or even graphic design, is all about, finding the beauty in everyday life and sharing that with others.

Rumpy: I like that! I agree there is beauty in the ordinary, if only we stop to notice. So how did you get started as an artist?

Bernadette: I’ve sketched all my life, starting with the bare crabapple tree in the snow on a winter day using one of my mother’s No. 2 pencils on probably one of my mother’s index cards. I took regular art classes all through school and didn’t study art in college, I have a BA in English because I wanted to be a writer, though I took a few basic drawing classes.

Rumpy: Wow! So what made you decide to use your cats as models?

Bernadette: After college I had a job with crazy hours and I decided I wanted to start sketching again since I couldn’t do much else with the odd hours, so I got my pencils and drew from photos but I wasn’t happy with it. I kept visualizing drawings of the family of cats I lived with then, and once I began drawing them it all came together and I realized, for me at least, I have to have a great depth of feeling for my subject in order for my art to work. I moved from pencil sketches to pastel paintings, when others saw them they wanted one too and this led to my commissioned pet portraits.

Rumpy: I love it! And it sounds familiar. It was Jen’s furry family that is her muse to write. So tell us about this wonderful family of cats of yours?

Bernadette: Right now I am down to five cats from a typical household of nine or ten after 30 years of rescuing and fostering. It’s a little strange when I used to have the most cats of nearly anyone I knew, and they were nearly all cats I’d picked up off the road or pulled from a dumpster or wheedled off of someone who was neglecting them, all with great needs but also great rewards. None of the cats who “got me where I am” as an artist are with me any more; the last two left with Cookie and Kelly earlier this year and with them went the last of those who knew me when.

Rumpy: I’m sorry to hear that.

Bernadette: Now this family of five black cats is quite special. The mom, Mimi belonged to a neighbor who did not spay her despite my nagging, and Mimi had six litters, all four kittens, nearly all black kittens. The neighbors brought me the kittens nearly each time to help them find homes, and one black kitten from Mimi’s fourth litter ended up not being adopted and staying with me. I was caring for four geriatric cats at the time and I would lose them all in the course of a year. Lucy was nearly a year old at the end of all the loss, but then she developed effusive FIP and died at 15 months. I knew her mom was expecting again, so I asked the neighbor for the mom and they just gave her to me. These five are part of an FIP study at UC Davis veterinary school, and I had kept them all for their first year to observe for any symptoms. They are five now, Mimi is about 8, and there have never been any symptoms. (read more about it here).

Rumpy: Wow! I had no idea! How wonderful they are still with you, and that they have done so much to help other cats live longer, happier lives! Bernadette, if people want to check out your work, where can they do that?

Bernadette: Depending on what they want to look at they can go to my main website (www.bernadette-k.com) and click on “fine art and portraiture”. Many of the other links on that home page also lead to artwork and I’d encourage people to explore. Visit The Creative Cat for daily photos and daily sketches plus articles about my cats and my art, and also visit Pinterest for an easy way to browse.

Rumpy: I hope everyone does, because you truly have a way of creating the beauty that is a cat. Just don’t tell June Buggie I said that. Now, last question, if you was a dinosaur, what kind would you be?

Bernadette: I have no idea! We have dinosaurs all over Pittsburgh because of Carnegie Museum of Natural History and all they’ve done to identify and learn about them, but I’ve never pictured myself as one. Maybe one of those little ones.

Rumpy: I’ll bet you’d probably be more like a prehistoric kitty! Thank you SOOOOO much for being my guest today!

Friends Around the World- Super Star Edition!

Posted in pets with tags , , , , , on September 8, 2011 by rumpydog

Oh Dog! Today we have a star on my blog! Well, OK, he’s not a star yet, but I know he’s gonna be! I met Jimmie while doing a bit of blog surfing. He’s an amazing young guy and I just know you’re gonna be as blown away by him as I am. Dogs and cats, put your paws together for Jimmie Chew!!!!!

Rumpy: Hi Jimmie, how about we start out by having you tell us a little bit about you.

Jimmie: I am from the streets. I am studying to be a model/actor.

I hope to expand my career into film making and philanthropy. Eventually, I would like to get behind the camera. I don’t want to be remembered as just another cute cat. I want to open the doors for other “regular” cats into showbiz. I also have a screenplay I would like you to read.

Rumpy: *rolls eyes* Great sound bites there kid, but we want to know the REAL Jimmie.

Jimmie: *sigh* Alright, I’m about three months old now. I was six weeks old when my human friend found me out side.

She has two cats she just adopted, and did not want to keep me, but another friend of hers that is a crazy animal lover, that would do or say anything to help an animal, told my human she would train me and get me a modeling job. Now that friend is NOT a trainer and hasn’t lived with a cat since high school. But she rose to the challenge.

My trainer stops by to feed us cats when our human’s working, so she started training me with a clicker and taking pictures of me. My trainer had so many pics, that she and my human set up a blog to keep track of my training.

Darnell, Fin and I really enjoy the photo shoots, and it’s not hard work at all. As for getting me a “modeling” job, that’s not been so easy. But my humans are now looking to volunteer at hospitals and schools with me. I like putting on a show. My human is in love with me now so it doesn’t matter if I get a “job”. But it would be nice, because she can barely afford her rent, nevermind the vet bills.

Rumpy: Now that I can relate to. When Jen rescued me she was making more money than she is now, and we started my blog so I could earn some money to pay for doggie daycare. So Jimmie, what are your favorite treats?

Jimmie: I love Bonito flakes, wild caught salmon, free range chicken and kitten milk, which is the secret to my luminous fur.

Rumpy: Sounds like you models live the good life! What do you like best about your humans? Any complaints?

Jimmie: The best thing about my human is she can grow her own whiskers.

Rumpy: *ROLF* So can mine!

Jimmie: The only complaint is that I am not allowed to chew the shoes with the red bottoms.

Rumpy: I have found myself in trouble before for chewing shoes, so I leave those things alone. So, how long have you been on Twitter?

Jimmie: I don’t twitter

Rumpy: What about Face book?

Jimmie: I don’t Face book

Rumpy: Well What DO you do?

Jimmie: I have a blog where my humans post my pics. It’s http://jimmiechew.wordpress.com/

Rumpy: Cool! What is one thing about you; you want all your friends to know?

Jimmie: Sharing a litter box is no day at the beach.

Rumpy: It’s no picnic from this end either. One last question, if you were a dinosaur, what kind of dinosaur would you be?

Jimmie: I’d be a Chewasaurous Rex.

Rumpy: What on earth is that? Never mind. Well Jimmie, thanks so much for being my guest today, and I encourage everyone to check out Jimmie’s blog for some more awesome pics starring Jimmie and his brothers.

How to Choose a Pet Photographer

Posted in pets with tags , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2011 by rumpydog

Oh Dog! Today I want to talk about pet photography. I’m betting more than one of you have humans that have thought about having professional portraits made of their pets. Maybe they’re like Jen. She says she’s often thought of having professional portraits made of me, but I’m not the best-behaved dog in the world and she didn’t want to waste the photographer’s time and not get quality photos of me.

So today I’m talking to professional photographer Abe Ortiz of Lafmil Photography about what folks like Jen should look for in finding a good pet photographer.

I first met Abe through DDRTX Puppy Mill Spokesdog Rainbow Diamond. Abe has taken some amazing portraits of her!

Abe has been a photography afficionado for over 12 years. He’s been in business for over 2 of those years and providing folks with portraits. His specialty at LAFMIL Photography is just that, portraits. Anything from Pet portraiture, to Graduates/Seniors, Models, and of course Bridal, Engagement, and Wedding portraiture. Abe is based in San Antonio, but he is mobile, and will travel anywhere if the price is right.

The photos posted here today are those Abe has taken professionally.

Rumpy: Abe, thanks so much for being here today!

Abe: I love it Rump! Let’s do this !;)

Rumpy: Here’s a question I imagine lots of humans asking themselves: I see great photos made of well-trained dogs, but my dogs are not well-trained. What do I look for in a photographer?

Abe: Well, it’s not the dog that is well-trained, it is the photographer. See, I have to be extremely patient to be able to get the shot that I am looking for. I just wait and the pup will eventually show his/her personality and I snap it as soon as I see it. You want to look at the photographer’s past work and check to see if the pictures all look the same (i.e. in a studio, same background, same poses etc) or if they are artistic and getting unique shots and especially shots of the pup and their personality. You don’t want someone who will be “Wal-mart” style and just do one look, same thing over and over…just plain blah >:P

Rumpy: I’ve seen lots of pet photos on Facebook, including those taken by professionals. Some are great! And some…. well, not so much. So Abe, what in your opinion makes a good pet photo?

Abe: A good pet photo is one where you are drawn into it. A shot that you don’t just look at and say “Oh that’s pretty”, or “Oh that’s a good picture”. You want to see who the pet is, again, their personality. You want to see beautiful images that make you go “AWWWWWW” or “Oooooh, that is an AWESOME picture” or “How did you get that shot/ get the (pet) to do that?” . Those are the responses that measures a “good pet photo.”

Rumpy: Some pet parents who may be thinking of getting their pet(s) photo taken professionally may wonder what to expect. Is there anything you think potential clients should know or do before showing up for a photo shoot?

Abe: Really, not much. All I ask is that they let their pet be themselves, don’t make them out to be the perfect pet they really aren’t. And maybe have a couple of ideas of what kind of portrait they would like or are looking for. I’ll do my best to capture it. Usually works out beautifully in the end. :)

Rumpy: What questions should I ask a photographer when deciding who to use?

Abe: Most important…do they have pets, especially the pet that you live with. It would not matter how good a photographer he/she is, they could be a Master Photographer with a Nobel Peace Prize for taking the pic of Lassie saving Timmy from the well, if they don’t know the subject they are capturing…walk away. They will not know what to see when they are looking through the lens. And ultimately, they will not capture your pet as the pet they are.

Then, you want to ask the basic questions, how long they have been shooting (professionally), how much they charge per session/print/package/cd, how long will the session take (my session is pretty unlimited as I wait to wrap up only after I have captured everything the pet gives me), do you need to bring anything. Also, ask them who they are. Not just who they are as in “Oh, I’m John Smith photographer”, who they are as a person. Get to know them as a person, if they shut down and clam up, you probably have the wrong person. Ultimately, if they really are good, they will want to get to know you because that is part of what makes the shot. Knowing who you are and what you like so that they can capture that for you.

Rumpy: That makes sense. It also develops a working relationship that can be beneficial for both of you. What else would you add?

Abe: Make sure that you get a good “vibe” from the photographer you eventually choose to make your portraits. Actually, that goes for any photographer and the style that you are looking for. If the photographer is crabby, has a bad attitude, doesn’t have what some might call “the social skills”…what kind of pic do you think they will produce for you?

Also, just do your homework and research your photographer…if you have seen their past work and are completely in love with what they produce, chances are you will be in love with the shots they give you of your fur kiddo. Also, if you do love what they give you and the experience they provided, let your other friends know, let your family know…help your photog out and keep them in mind when you need more pics taken too! ;)

We are on Facebook at facebook.com/lafmilphoto, on Twitter @lafmilphoto and our website at lafmilphotography.com. We can be reached at either our FB page or via email. And, just for fun, you can read our blogs at lafmil.blogspot.com…this week, we posted some funny photos. ;)

Rumpy: Abe, thanks so much! This is some great advice for all our pet parents out there!
